OCTOBER

1          Saturday: Fun Hike Whitetop Mountain

See the fall colors including all the berries on the beautiful Mt Ash trees from Buzzard Rock and Whitetop Mtn.  Hike about 6 miles (a moderate hike) from Elk Garden uphill to Whitetop and Buzzard Rock, then down the mountain to parking on Rt 601.  Meet 9:00 at Elk Garden parking or 8:30 at 601 parking if you want to help with car pooling after the hike.  Let hike leader, Sharon Trumbley, know if you plan to come and to decide who parks where, mtrogersatc@gmail.com.  Don’t forget raingear, water and food.

11        Tuesday:  Fun Hike:  High Country Loop in Fall colors.  This is a hard, loop hike of almost 11 miles on the AT and the Pine Mtn Trail, but we’ll probably take a few shortcuts and lose a mile or more.  Meet at Massie Gap at 8:30. Bring raingear, lunch, and plenty of water and snacks.  This is an all-day hike.  Email hike leader Carol Broderson to be included and hear about any changes mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

14-16   Friday – Sunday:  Fall Naturalist Rally. For information see https://blueridgediscoverycenter.org.

21-23   Friday – Sunday: Virginia Creeper Trail Fest in Damascus. The club will have an informational booth from 10-3 and host an invasive plant removal walk at 1 PM on Saturday.  Club members are needed for both. To volunteer email mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

29        Saturday: Fun hike through Virginia history and south on the AT in Smyth Co.  Meet at the parking lot of the Settlers Museum of Southwest Virginia, 1322 Rocky Hollow Rd, Atkins, at 9:30 AM (about 35 minutes from I81 exit 26 in Emory to exit 54 Adkins).  There is no fee for parking, but a purely voluntary donation for touring the small property with historic buildings en route to the trail would be welcomed by the museum.  We will walk up the AT S, a moderate hike with hills, about 3 or so miles, depending on interest and the weather, and then back again. Bring food, rain gear, poles if needed, water, etc.  Email leader Felicia Mitchell to sign up and to hear about any changes: mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

NOVEMBER

4          Friday: Fun hike to Cascades and Barney’s Wall. Meet at the Cascades parking lot near Pembroke Va at 9:30 ($3 exact change parking fee) and hike a very scenic lower trail along little Stoney Creek up to the Cascades Falls. (66 feet high and arguably one of the prettiest in Va). We will then leave the falls and hike up to Barney’s wall for a great view from a cliff of the New River Valley.  We will return to the parking lot via an upper trail along a fire road.  Approximately 8 mile hike with a reported 1600 foot elevation gain, but a very moderate hike.  Leader, Steve Ferris.  Let him know you plan to come by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

9          Wednesday:  Club and Partnership meetings live at the Trail Center and online via ZOOM.  Club meeting 10:30 A.M. Break for sack lunch at noon.  Annual meeting with our Agency Partners at 1:00 PM. Snacks and desserts to share welcome.  The club will provide paper products, coffee and tea (hot and cold).  Information will be sent in the Sunday Club email in early November.
