ACTIVITY SCHEDULE – Summer 2018 July, August, September

 

Updates on trail work locations and recreational hike plans are sent out by email to club members and friends a few days prior to these activities. If you don’t get club email, contact Doug Levin, Trails Coordinator, at mratcinfo@gmail.com or 276-698-2805 for information on trail work or to report trail work needs or contact the general club email address for recreational hikes:  mtrogersatc@gmail.com. 23 Saturday. Fun hike: Laurel Falls in Hampton, Tn. From the parking area on 321/67 hike in on Blueline trail to the AT. Follow this using the high water part of the loop, then down to the falls, and return using the low water loop. This isn’t a long hike, about 4.5 miles, but is moderate to strenuous due to rock climbing, steepness, but the falls are a wonderful cool place on a hot summer day. Let hike leader, Sharon Trumbley, know if you are coming, trumbleys@hotmail.com or 276-356-3683. Meet at parking lot before Heartwood (exit 14) at 8:30 AM.

18 Wednesday. A fun hike of to Laurel Falls in Hampton Tn. Hiking about 5 miles RT, but parts of trail very steep and rocky. Falls a great place to spend a hot summer day. Meet at 8:30 parking lot at VHCC on left before turn to Heartwood on the right. Bring lots of fluids, lunch, rain gear if weather forecast appropriate. We will hike in from the Hampton parking lot on the Blueline trail and join the AT using the high water part of the loop then come back on the lower loop. 18 Wednesday. Club meeting at the Abingdon library at 7 PM (note change from July 11). Topics: Hardcore evaluation, formation of Nominating Committee, Konnarock Crew projects and campsite guarding, planning for Public Lands Day and ATC Family Hiking Day. All club members encouraged to attend.

 

21 Saturday. Fun hike led by Doug Levin: An 8 mile loop northeast of Damascus starting on the Buzzard Den trail and ultimately returning on the Wright Hollow trail. Some steep and rocky/wet areas. Meet at Lowes exit 19 at 9:00. Bring lunch, plenty of water, and raingear if any chance of rain. Email Doug at staceydoug@centurylink.net if you plan to join.

27-31 Konnarock Crew working between Thomas Knob and Rhododendron Gap. Club members will be campsite guards.

 

28 Saturday. Rare plant monitoring hike: meet at Grayson Highlands State Park (GHSP) at the parking area across from the campground store at 9:30 for an approximately 5 mile hike in search of Blue Ridge St Johnswort. August

1 Wednesday. Trail work. See July 7.

 

4 Saturday. Fun hike led by Marcia Pruner on Little Stony Creek Trail in the Jefferson National Forrest near Dungannon Va: a moderate 6 mile in and out hike on an old railroad spur, much like those in the Smokies, to 3 waterfalls, one of which, Stoney Creek Falls, is thought to be the most photographed falls in the Tri-cities. 10-12 ATC Volunteer Leadership Meeting in Shepherdstown, WV.

 

11 Saturday. Fun hike lead by Marcia Pruner to Brumley Creek Falls: about 8 miles, rated difficult due to mileage, beginning at Hidden Valley Lake, in Washington Co Va north of Abingdon. The hike begins at the dam and climbs to the top of the Clinch Mt, then east with ups and downs until dropping off toward Brumley Creek and bushwacking down to an old road taking us to Brumley Creek Falls for lunch...After this, follow the creek on a mostly old RR bed, back to the lake. 29 Wednesday. Rare Plant Monitoring hike: meet at Elk Garden at 9:30 to hike up to Whitetop and back, about 5 miles RT. We’ll be looking for Great Indian Plantain and others. Contact Carol Broderson at mtrogersatc@gmail.com for more information or to join the hike.

8 Saturday. Hike from Dickey Gap (Rtes. 16/650) past Comers Creek Falls on the AT, then hike by way of the Iron Mtn. Trail to the Flat Top Trail to Fairwood. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the caboose in Damascus to carpool, or at 9:05 at Fairwood pkg. lot on 603. We will leave some cars, then carpool to Dickey Gap to start. About 8.5 miles. 12 Wednesday. Hike 3 miles on the gently sloping Flat Top trail, in Moses Cone Park on the Blueridge Parkway, to the Flat top tower and a wonderful mountain view. Return the same way for a total of 6 miles. Meet at 8:30 AM at Lowe’s exit 19 Abingdon or 8:45 at the caboose in Damascus.
