ACTIVITY SCHEDULE

June - September 

 

For recreational hikes and trail work trips, updates/final hike plans are sent out by email to club members during the week prior to the hike. If you don’t get email, please call leader to check on last minute plans! Updates are also posted on www.mratc.org/Current Week’s Information and on our Facebook page: Mt. Rogers Appalachian Trail Club.

 

MRATC FRIDAY HIKERS: A moderately paced hiking group. Group consensus will determine the trail to hike each week. Call Judith F. at 276 623 2408 or Judith W. 276 628 2848 to join a

June

 

3 Saturday. National Trails Day. Join a family hike 1 1⁄2 miles to and from Buzzard Rock on Whitetop Mountain, the second highest mountain in Virginia. Meet at LOWES, Falcon Blvd., exit 19 off I-81, garden end of parking lot , at 9:30 AM. Bring lunch, water, rain gear and poles (walking sticks) if you have them. 7 Wednesday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

10 Saturday. National Get Outdoors Day. The public is welcome. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 9 a.m. to hike the Straight Branch/Iron Mtn. Trail area. Distance and route depends on interest of participants. Bring lunch and water. Leader: Anne Maio 276-475-5114, trailsamkm@aol.com.

 

14 Wednesday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

23–27 Friday – Tuesday. Konnarock Crew will be working on our trail section, probably between Massie Gap and Thomas Knob. Club members may be needed to watch their campsite while they are working.

 

24 Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

27 Tuesday. Potluck for Konnarock Crew at Sugar Grove F.S. Work Center. Need club members to bring a side or dessert to share. The club will supply the main course. Setup: 5:30. Dinner at 6 p.m. Contact Anne trailsamkm@aol.com; 276-475-5114 for more information.

 

28 Wednesday. Hike in Grayson Highlands State Park: Park at Massie Gap. Hike the Cabin Creek Trail to see waterfall (a loop) and have snack, then over to Backpacker’s parking lot and up spur trail to the AT. Follow to Wise Shelter for lunch, then hike back to Massie Gap and down to parking lot. About 7 miles. Let leader, Sharon Trumbley, know if you plan to attend (trumbleys@hotmail.com or 276-356-3683). Meet at 8:30 at exit 19 Lowes in Abingdon, or at Massie Gap at 9:30-9:40.

 

July

 

1–5 Sat. – Wed. Konnarock Crew working on our trail section. Expected work site: between Thomas Knob and Rhododendron Gap.

 

5 Wednesday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

12 Wednesday. Club Meeting at Washington County Library in Abingdon at 7 p.m. All club members are welcome! Topics will include discussion of how our Hardcore project and logistics went and whether we want to host Hardcore next year. Also: discussion of possibilities to reorganize club leadership responsibilities.

 

12 Wednesday. Trail work (short project). Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

15 Saturday. Hike in Grayson Highlands State Park: Massie Gap to AT going south to Rhododendron Gap trail, Crest Trail, AT to Thomas Knob Shelter. On return take AT whole way back or Wilburn Ridge trail or Horse Trail part of way, depending on wishes of hikers. Total mileage about 8 miles. Meet at Lowes exit 19 Abingdon 8:30 AM or other meeting places by arrangement with hike leader. 22 Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

26 Wednesday. Hike in the Roan Mtn Area. Meet at the Heartwood Community Lot at 8:30AM. We will car pool to FS293 near the town of Roan Mtn and do a 8.5 to 9 mile total hike, finishing at Rt 19, with cars on either end. End points are about 10 minutes apart. This hike will cover two sections of the AT with a 1.5 mile connector (included in total distance) on a gravel/paved road. Bring lunch and water and dress appropriately. Hike leader Doug Levin. 29  Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

30  Sunday. Stroll Through the Vineyard, a Highlands Festival event inviting MRATC HIKERS/WALKERS to meet at Abingdon Vineyard and Winery, Alvarado Rd.,10 AM Sunday, July 30. Learn about the vineyard, production of wine, and sample 6 wines for $5. Purchase a glass or a bottle of wine and join friends on the patio for a picnic lunch.

 

August

 

5 Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

12 Saturday. Hike Hawksbill Mtn and possibly Devils Hole Trail (near Linville Gorge) . This is a failrly strenuous loop hike with rewarding views from Hawksbill. About 6 miles total, with 500 foot elevation change for Hawksbill and 900 for Devils Hole. Travel about 85 miles one way. Meet at Lowes exit 19 Abingdon 8:30 AM. 1  Deadline for items for Fall Newsletter

 

2  Saturday. Hike the Tanawha Trail from Rough Ridge to the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a loop hike of about 5 miles, returning on the Parkway. Stunning views and late summer wildflowers. Meet at Lowes exit 19 Abingdon 8:30 AM. Please let hike leader know if you are coming: Jim Warden at jawarden@ehc.edu or 276-525-2516.

 

9 Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

13 Wednesday. Hike in Roan Mtn area: Carver’s Gap south on the AT, reaching Roan High Knob shelter in 1.5-2 miles (all uphill), then the peak of Roan Mtn at about mile 2.5, then downhill to Ash Gap, reached at 3 miles, with the option of continuing another 2 miles to Hughes Gap, and return. So total mileage between 6-8 miles, but not easy. Meet at parking lot before Heartwood on left at VHCC campus 8:30 AM. Let hike leader know if coming: trumbleys@hotmail.com, 276-356-3683. 16 Saturday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m.

 

20 Wednesday. Hike Yellow Mountain Gap to Rt 19 south of the town of Roan Mtn. Meet at the Heartwood Community Lot at 8:30AM. We will car pool to a spur trail south of Yellow Mountain Gap (about a 75 minute drive) and hike the short spur to the AT (passing the Over Mountain Shelter). We will then hike north on the AT over Little Hump and Hump Mtns (steep sections with beautiful views) before a long descent brings us to cars spotted at the Rt 19 AT crossing. End points are about a 20 minute drive apart. Total hike distance between 9.5 and 10 miles. Bring lunch and water and dress appropriately. Hike leader Doug Levin. 23 Saturday. Probable date for Public Lands Day at the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area HQ. The club will have a booth and help lead hikes for visitors.

27 Wednesday. Trail work. Meet at the caboose in Damascus at 8:30 a.m. 30 Saturday. ATC Family Hike Day. Plans to be announced.
