23 Saturday

Saturday.  Easy hike on the Creeper from Watauga to Alvarado to see early spring wildflowers.  Meet at 9:30 AM at Watauga parking for the Creeper trail.  We will walk along the Creeper for about 4 miles (with the possibility of more walking after Alvarado or lunch at the Winery) and view wildflowers.  A car or 2 will be waiting at Alvarado to take folks back to their cars at Watauga.  Let hike leader, Sharon Trumbley, know if you plan to come by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.  Bring water and lunch for a picnic at some point.

AT Hike:  6-8 mile hike in the Dickey Gap area.  We will use the AT, Bobbie's Trail and The Virginia Highlands Trail for a ~6 mile loop, with an additional 2-mile hike to Comer's Falls for those interested.  Meet at the Dickey Gap AT parking area on Highway 16 at 9:30.  Bring fluids and lunch, and dress for the weather.  Let hike leader, Frank White, know if you hope to participate and if you need directions by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

Wildflower Hike: Hike to see wildflowers at the Pinnacle Natural Area near Lebanon. Meet at the Pinnacle parking at 10 AM. (Directions will be sent to anyone who needs them and there is the possibility of carpooling.) Hike the Big Cedar Creek, Grapevine, Pinnacle View and Copper Ridge Trails for 5-6 miles and enjoy the incredible wildflowers and views of the area. Hiking is easy to moderate with a fair amount of elevation gain on the Grapevine and Copper Ridge trails. Bring fluids and lunch, and dress for the weather.  Mount Rogers Trail Hike: Meet at 9:30 A.M. at the parking lot on VA 603 near the Smyth-Grayson county line for an out-and-back hike of approximately six miles. Our trek will take us through Lewis Fork Wilderness with old-growth hardwood trees, interesting geological formations, and early wildflowers. The Channels Trail: Out and back to the 400-million-year-old Great Channels of Virginia. This impressive formation is a sandstone outcropping where geologic processes have created deep crevices or “channels” in between very large residual boulders. Distance is approximately 6 miles. Hike from White Rock area to Panther Lick in the Clinch Mountain WMA: Expect an incredible show of wildflowers including fringed phacelia and blue-eyed Mary, along with fine vistas. Details TBD, but tentatively plan to meet at Hayter’s Gap Public Library at 9:30 a.m. With appropriate car-spotting, this is a 5 mile one way hike with some altitude change. Hike sections of the Iron Mtn. and Appalachian Trails: 7 miles with a lunch stop at Hurricane Shelter. Meet at Lowes, Garden Center end, at 8:15 a.m. to carpool, or meet the group at Fox Creek AT parking lot at 9 a.m. We will then carpool to Homestead Rd. to start. Leader: Anne Maio. Saturday Hike from Fox Creek to Pine Mountain via the AT: Meet at Fox Creek (SR 603 parking area) at 9:30am for an out-and-back walk on the AT of approximately 7 miles. The hike will gradually gain about 1500 ft in elevation as we walk thru some old Rhododendrons (in bloom), some rare flowering plants and some interesting rock formations, to enjoy a well-earned lunch in a highlands meadow. If it’s a clear day the meadow has wonderful views. We may encounter ponies, grazing steer, and perhaps some other wildlife as well! Bring water, lunch, rain gear if needed, and poles if you use them. Let leader, Mike Pivirotto, know if you plan to hike or have questions by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.
