MRATC Activities and Information, Week of March 17 – 23, 2024

Trail work cutting blowdowns on the AT on Beech Mtn., originally scheduled for March 16, will be today, March 17, starting at the Damascus Trail Center at 9:30.

A tentative workday is planned with E&H for Sat March 23, but the project details haven't been defined yet. Stay tuned for more details :mratcinfo@gmail.com.

This hike was originally scheduled for March 16th and was moved to March 23..

Sat., March 23: Easy hike on the Creeper from Watauga to Alvarado to see early spring wildflowers.  Meet at 9:30 AM at Watauga parking for the Creeper trail.  We will walk along the Creeper for about 4 miles (with the possibility of more walking after Alvarado or lunch at the Winery) and view wildflowers. A car or 2 will be waiting at Alvarado to take folks back to their cars at Watauga.  Let hike leader, Sharon Trumbley, know if you plan to come by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.  Bring water and lunch for a picnic at some point.  A special feature of this hike will be a short tour offered by owners of property adjacent to the Creeper Trail who are working to conserve their land as a wildlife sanctuary, once brush and non-native species are removed.

Next club hike: Sat., March 30.

AT Hike:  6-8 mile hike in the Dickey Gap area.  We will use the AT, Bobby's Trail and The Virginia Highlands Trail for a ~6 mile loop, with an additional 2-mile hike to Comers Creek Falls for those interested.  Meet at the Dickey Gap AT parking area on Highway 16 at 9:30.  Bring fluids and lunch, and dress for the weather.  Let hike leader, Frank White, know if you hope to participate and if you need directions by emailing mtrogersatc@gmail.com.

It’s that time of year – Konnarock Basecamp opening - March 18th to 20th.  We welcome the pleasure of your company for any amount of time you may have available.

Major work this year includes installing new doors on several pods, repairing other doors, some painting, repairing plumbing in the kitchen & bathrooms as needed; and other sundry repairs. Also, there’s the usual general building cleanup, camping equipment and tool checks and repairs, etc. to be done.

As always, ATC will provide food and luxury lodging during your stay.

Please RSVP via email (jkyle@appalachiantrail.org) with which days, or day, you plan to attend so that we may have proper food and supplies available.
